Tattoos are permanent, and many do not believe they will ever fall “out of love” with the ink on their body. However, patients often regret their tattoos and want to learn about laser tattoo removal. Seriously Skin Cosmetic and Laser Medicine, Cosmetic and Laser Medicine provides laser tattoo removal with one of the most advanced Q-switched technologies, QX MAX. This powerful laser can remove common ink colors and pigmented lesions.

There are many advantages to using the QX MAX laser for tattoo removal. This system offers five laser sources and uses the highest single-pulse energy available for effective treatment.

Laser tattoo removal

Laser tattoo removal with the Fotona QX MAX Q-Switched laser:

The QX MAX laser:

  • Has four wavelengths to cover all ink colors
  • Uses 532nm, the gold standard for removing red ink
  • Uses 585nm to remove blue ink
  • Uses 650nm, the gold standard for removing green ink
  • Uses 1064nm, the gold standard for removing black ink. This wavelength is also highly absorbed by black, so it’s easy for the QX MAX to do its work and do so without complications of hypopigmentation and hyperpigmentation
  • Uses pulses with great speed at five nanoseconds

Here are some common recommendations before the first laser tattoo removal treatment:

  • Reduce or avoid using self-tanning products, tanning beds, and sun exposure for approximately two weeks before the visit. Utilizing SPF30 broad-spectrum sunscreen is recommended.
  • Remove jewelry from the treatment area.
  • Patients may need to undergo several sessions to effectively remove the tattoo. Patients cannot expect optimum results just after one treatment, as the laser must break up the ink over time.
  • After treatment, patients are encouraged to follow the instructions given by their provider for aftercare. The area may become white and swollen and result in minor pinpoint bleeding. Crusting and blistering may also occur, but all of this should heal within a week. The area treated should receive the same care and attention as a mild burn, and nothing should be applied to the wound for the first day. After this point, patients can use laser balm on the area to help it heal, which may take two weeks. Patients should avoid breaking the blisters, shaving, sun exposure, hot tubs, and pools until the area has fully healed.

Laser Tattoo Removal FAQ

How does laser tattoo removal work?

Laser tattoo removal uses high-intensity light energy to break tattoo ink into tiny particles. The laser targets pigment beneath the skin without damaging surrounding tissue. Once the ink is shattered, your body’s immune system gradually clears it away. Fading happens over several weeks after each session, making the removal process progressive and controlled.

Can laser treatment work on all tattoos?

Lasers can remove most tattoos, but results vary depending on ink color, depth, age, and skin type. Black, red, and dark blue inks respond the fastest because they absorb all laser wavelengths. Lighter colors like green, yellow, and light blue are difficult to remove and need more sessions. We’ll create a treatment plan tailored to your needs and goals.

What makes QX Max unique?

QX Max Laser is an advanced Q-switched laser system designed for powerful, precise pigment targeting. It delivers high-energy pulses in extremely short bursts that target tattoos without damaging surrounding skin. It also has four wavelengths that treat multiple ink colors.

How many sessions do I need?

There is no one-size-fits-all answer. The number of sessions depends on several factors, such as:

  • Age of tattoo
  • Size
  • Ink color
  • Location
  • An individual’s skin type

Typically, most tattoos require 6-8 sessions for complete removal. Our skin therapist will assess your tattoo and give you a realistic treatment estimate.

Will it hurt?

Pain tolerance varies from patient to patient, although many compare the sensation of laser treatment to the snap of a rubber band against the skin. The discomfort is much less than that of getting a tattoo initially. Furthermore, sessions are typically short, especially for smaller tattoos.

Can a tattoo be partially removed?

Yes. Many patients choose partial removal of an existing tattoo to change its design without getting a completely new one. Fading specific sections allows tattoo artists to work more effectively and create newer, more vibrant designs. Your aesthetician will tailor treatment to target specific areas while leaving others intact.

Is laser tattoo removal safe?

Tattoo removal with lasers is very safe when administered by trained personnel. At our office, we use FDA-cleared lasers and follow strict protocols to ensure your safety. However, like other treatments, you may experience side effects. Common ones include swelling, redness, and blistering in the treatment area. These reactions are part of the body’s healing process and usually resolve within days.

How long does it take to remove my tattoos?

The timeline for removing your tattoos varies widely. Factors such as size, color, location, and your immune system all play a role. Typically, the procedure can take several months to a year with several repeat sessions. Retreatments must be spaced apart to allow your body time to flush out ink particles.

How should I care for my skin after laser treatment?

Post-op care promotes healing and helps you achieve the best results. After each session:

  • Keep the area clean with mild soap and water
  • Apply a healing content to aid with recovery
  • Avoid sun exposure and apply SPF daily
  • Do not pick at scabs or blisters
  • Avoid hot tubs, pools, and intense workouts for a few days
  • Stay hydrated
