At Seriously Skin, we often see both men and women who come into our practice wanting to learn about body contouring options. In addition, some patients want to combat their “double chin” without plastic surgery or liposuction. A double chin is also referred to as “submental fullness.” It occurs underneath the chin yet above the neck and is an aesthetic concern as it can make patients look heavier and older. In many cases, it may be caused by genetics, but it can also be made more noticeable by weight gain or aging. The American Society for Dermatologic Surgery completed a survey and found that approximately 68 percent of adult individuals are bothered by their “double chin.”
Thankfully, there is an injectable available on the market that is FDA-approved to contour this area and reduce the appearance of excessive submental fullness. This injectable is known as Kybella. Kybella is the first and only product on the market that is intended to improve this area of the face and allow patients to see dramatic results without plastic surgery.
Kybella is formulated with deoxycholic acid. This non-human, non-animal formulation can be used to break down the absorption of dietary fat. When injected, it destroys the fat cells to eliminate storage and accumulation. It is injected in a specific manner to avoid salivary glands, muscles, lymph nodes, and the marginal mandibular nerve.
Injections of Kybella are done quickly in our office. At Seriously Skin, most patients will be in and out of our office shortly and will achieve visible results after several treatments spaced weeks apart. Patients may benefit different number of treatments over several months, depending on the person. The results are gradual but noticeable and patients who have undergone Kybella injections are often ecstatic with their results.
