Photodynamic Therapy Treatments – Levulan Therapy at Seriously Skin, Cleveland

Acne can affect patients of all ages. Many patients begin to experience acne when they are teenagers going through puberty, with hormonal changes happening every day. However, some patients continue to experience acne well into their adult years, and it is common for adults to deal with acne blemishes for decades.

Patients who want to find an effective solution to acne often visit a cosmetic dermatology office after over-the-counter methods have failed. Prescription strength acne topicals and medications can ease acne for many patients. In addition, patients are also introduced to alternative therapies that can be used in conjunction with at-home skin care products, including Levulan Photodynamic therapy for acne.

Photodynamic therapy is a light-based treatment used for the improvement of skin conditions such as acne. With treatment using blue light and a topical solution known as Levulan, patients can enjoy a fast and effective way to treat their acne with minimal downtime. Unlike other laser and IPL treatments, which require several sessions for long-term results, patients can undergo just one treatment with the team at Seriously Skin and see amazing results!

Treatment takes one hour or longer. It begins with the application of Levulan onto the skin about two to six hours prior to the start of treatment. Patients will then return to the office following their incubation period to and sit under LightWave blue light. This treatment may be used on the face, neck, chest, or back. Patients will leave the practice with aftercare instructions.

Patients who have undergone Levulan Photodynamic Therapy will require a few days of downtime to allow the skin to heal. Patients will experience sun sensitivity for approximately two days after therapy and should avoid any sun exposure. Peeling of dead skin cells is expected for a few days afterwards, as the skin’s natural healing process is stimulated. After approximately one week, patients will see a significant reduction in their acne blemishes and can continue to use at-home skincare routines to see results that are even more dramatic over the course of time. Levulan, developed by Dusa Pharmaceuticals is FDA-approved for the treatment of actinic keratosis. It has been found through clinical testing that it can provide the benefits in treating other skin conditions as well, including:

  • Precancerous spots
  • Sun damaged skin
  • Age spots
  • Uneven skin pigmentation
  • Acne
  • Acne scarring
  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • Sun spots

BBL ACNE THERAPY

Acne can be a troublesome, embarrassing condition. While once thought of as a problem of teenagers with ever-changing hormones, actually, acne is a condition that affects millions of adults as well. Acne can cause redness, discomfort, and reduce self-esteem, as it can be difficult to hide.

While many patients enjoy over-the-counter products and topical therapies through their dermatologists, others may want a way to treat their acne faster with the use of available medical technologies. Many patients who are seeking a solution to their acne may benefit by combining daily skincare therapies with IPL (Intense Pulsed Light).

Intense Pulsed Light is a proven way to address varying levels of acne, including moderate to severe cases. Patients who want to avoid going through treatments such as long-term antibiotics or oral medications such as Accutane can turn to Intense Pulsed Light for effective treatment with fewer risks and side effects.

Intense Pulsed Light uses shorter wavelengths in the blue light spectrum that are known for attacking the bacteria that results in acne, both on the surface and in the sebaceous glands. When combined with an effective home skincare program, patients will enjoy the benefits with an improvement in their acne.

Patients with acne-prone skin can enjoy clearer skin by undergoing a series of initial treatments. At Seriously Skin, we recommend patients start with a series of approximately four sessions spaced two weeks apart. After this, more treatments can be done, and maintenance sessions can be completed every few months for continued results.

Patients struggling with acne-prone skin can speak with a dermatologist at our Seriously Skin practice about developing an appropriate treatment plan. Using a combination of at-home skincare treatments and regular Intense Pulsed Light therapies, patients will see a dramatic improvement in the texture and tone of their skin, as well as a reduction in acne blemishes.
