This exfoliation treatment is performed by a professional who uses a scalpel to essentially scrape off the upper layer of dull, dead skin cells. While this may sound scary, it’s safe and effective when performed by a dedicated professional.
Not only does dermaplaning remove the upper layer of dead skin, but it can also eliminate “peach fuzz” – that light facial hair that can become more noticeable when patients wear cosmetics. The surface is left extremely smooth, and the fresh skin allows better penetration of the skin care products patients know and love. Then, the skin is pulled tight as a sterile 10-gauge scalpel is used at a 45-degree angle to remove dead skin cells and peach fuzz in short, quick strokes. The entire face is treated within approximately a half hour.
Dermaplaning is a treatment that is side effect free! There is no downtime or healing that is required, though most patients will be aware of some pink coloration due to the treatment that can be easily improved with wearing cosmetics for the remainder of the day. The skin will also be extremely sensitive to sun exposure, so we recommend either avoiding sun exposure for a few days after treatment or using a very high SPF sunscreen to reduce the risk of excessive UVA and UVB exposure that can lead to hyperpigmentation.
